Moral decadence in a French society undergoing degeneration through Nana by Émile Zola
The novel in the 19th century serves as a means to represent social facts. Thus, the novelist takes on the role of studying actions, personal contributions, and the role of various actors in society. In this article, the focus is on studying Nana, a novel depicting the customs of the Second Empire period, which highlights an eponymous courtesan of dazzling beauty, renowned in Paris where she is transformed into an object of exhibition and consumption. In return, she capitalizes on the magical effect of her highly attractive body to subjugate the most important men in this fictional society in order to enrich herself. The novel stages the perversion of customs and debauchery, observing the abandonment of moral values in an economic context where everything, having become a commodity, no longer has a fixed value. Therefore, this critical study of Zola's novel, conducted through the use of the Interdiscursive Event (Jürgen Link and Ursula Link-Heer: 1985), which favors the synchronous system of collective symbols, will reveal the process of moral decadence in a society undergoing degeneration. Through this study, the aim is to demonstrate how the female body is transformed into a speculative commodity that generates wealth and how this body becomes a weapon for the deconstruction of the wealth of the victims in love, ultimately contributing to the collapse of morality in this contemporary fictional society.
